OJS Installation Errors We Solve Every Week

If your OJS installation failed or your journal stopped working, you are not alone. These are the problems journals bring to us most often.

Installation times out on cPanel or shared hosting The installer stops halfway or the page keeps loading until the server gives up.
"You don't have permission to access this resource" 403 Forbidden errors on the installer, the files directory or uploaded PDFs.
500 Internal Server Error or a blank page OJS shows nothing at all, or a generic server error, after installing or updating.
Moving OJS from localhost to a live server A journal built on your computer or a test server that breaks after moving to a real domain.
Installing on a subdomain or changing the URL Broken links, missing styles or redirect loops after moving OJS to a new path or subdomain.
SSL, HTTPS and Cloudflare problems Mixed content warnings, endless redirects or a site that only half loads over HTTPS.
Emails are not being sent Registration, submission and review emails never arrive, or land in spam.
App key and configuration errors in OJS 3.5 Configuration and app key errors that stop a fresh OJS 3.5 installation from starting.
Upgrade failures An upgrade from OJS 2.x, 3.3 or 3.4 that stops partway and leaves the journal offline.
Plugins and themes stop working Plugins or themes that break after a version change or a PHP upgrade on the server.

How It Works

Four Simple Steps

1

Share Your Details

Tell us what you need, or send the error message and your hosting details.

2

Free Diagnosis

We review the problem and send a clear, fixed quote and timeline.

3

Install or Fix

We take a full backup first, then install, fix or upgrade OJS.

4

Test & Handover

We test submissions, emails and PDFs, then hand over a working journal.

Why not just follow a tutorial?

Getting the installer to finish is only the first step. Many problems we fix come from installations that seemed to work but were set up in a way that later breaks emails, upgrades or indexing. We set it up correctly once, so it keeps working.

FAQs

OJS Installation Questions

Common questions from editors and IT teams installing or upgrading OJS.

Ask a Question

OJS (Open Journal Systems) is free, open-source software from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), and it should always be downloaded from PKP's official website. Avoid modified copies from third-party sites. If you would rather not install it yourself, we can do it for you.

Installing OJS means preparing the server, database, file storage and configuration before running the installer. On a well-prepared server it is straightforward, but hosting limits, file permissions and PHP settings cause most failed installations. If you'd rather not risk it, we install OJS for you and hand it over ready to use.

Timeouts on shared hosting usually come from server limits rather than from OJS itself. The right fix depends on your hosting provider and plan. Send us the error and your hosting details and we will diagnose it for you.

Yes. We move your journal, including its database and uploaded files, to the live domain or subdomain and test that submissions, emails and PDFs all work. We also move OJS between hosting providers.

For a new journal we recommend the current stable OJS 3.x release that your server supports. If you are on an older version, upgrading is usually worth it for security and newer features. We check compatibility before every upgrade.

OJS runs on most PHP and MySQL hosting, but low-cost shared plans often hit their limits as a journal grows. We can work with your current hosting or university server, or provide managed OJS hosting.

It depends on your server, whether you need a fresh install or a fix, and how much configuration is required. Share your details and we will send a fixed quote within 24 hours.
